bee ornamentBee Goddess Ornament
by beautywatcher

Gingers rule with this ornament.  The adorable Bee Goddess, a reference to a Minoan deity of prophesy, is ready to whisper in your ear about the coming Spring. The ornament is about 3 1/2 inches across and is decorated with copper, glass beads, and glitter.  The back features a little flower.  In addition to the Minoan Bee Goddess other star ornaments include a peacock (for Hera or Saravati), Seshat, and a Japanese Lawyer God.  I’m ordering that last one for my husband so don’t tell him!  There are many more ornaments and you could give one or a set as a gift.

featherFeather ornament
by Gothic Glass Studio

Breathtaking describes these ornaments.   The artist collects feathers found on daily walks and encases them in clear glass with foil edges.  The one pictured is a hawk feather and with a Czech faceted glass bead on top.   Other items in the store that caught my eye are a red stained glass Goddess figure with her arms up raised, an Eye of Horus glass ornament, and a Tree of Life sun catcher. You can’t go wrong with any of the gifts offered.  Gothic Glass Studio is based out of Canada so keep that in mind for shipping time.  NOTE:  A reader alerted us to federal and state laws in the USA about possession of bird feathers.  It could gain you a larger fine than a bag of weed, depending on the type of bird.  So buyer beware.

earingsHestia stud earrings
by Lulu Frost

These earrings look like flames rising from a warm, inviting hearth so of course they are named for the Goddess of family ties and laughter over shared meals.  Perfect to wear on future Solstice celebrations (winter and summer), dressy events, or casual events.  They are polished without going overboard.  The posts are sterling silver while the fronts are brass with crystals.   Many of the crystals used by Lulu Frost are upcycled from vintage jewelry pieces.

Great Red Copper Pin of the SunGreat Red Copper Pin of the Sun
by Baltic Imports

Most of the pins are either reproductions of historical Baltic pieces or pay heavy homage to the style.  This pin is a large center sun with three sun blessings hanging down.  It measures 1.5 inches wide by 3.25 inches long.  Although most of the jewelry is bronze, copper, and amber a few are carved from a single piece of wood.  Certainly a man’s pin, they would work equally well for a woman.  Especially this woman.  Ahem.

wood necklace.
Tree of Life necklace

by Mystic Orb

When people tell me about someone they know who carves great wood jewelry the first thought that goes through my mind is “piece of crap.”  Mystic Orb took my biases and snobbery and shoved them right back at me.  I will say this is the best piece in their store, made from reclaimed spalted maple burl.  That’s because the artist worked as a partner with this piece of wood, revealing the Tree of Life, instead of forcing it to be something it’s not.  In that moment a wood carver become a sculptor and this is a wearable piece of art.  Snap it up, as a gift for someone else or for yourself, before it’s gone.

gameIron Age Game
by Brendan Myers

I haven’t yet had a chance to play this game, as it just came out, but I’m intrigued enough to add it to the Gift Picks list.  (I did order it, though) The game is a traditional table top game and looks like a good fit for teens, families, and bunch of friends at a Pagan festival (with horns of mead, Natch!)  Myers describes the game as, “a political strategy game, in which players compete and co-operate with each other to build a community.  The better you manage your village, and the better you manage your relations with other players, the more honor you will gain. And the more honor you gain, the better your position will be at a special democratic assembly called the Landsmoot, where one player is elected the Chieftain.”  Somehow Myers just made historical geo-politics fun.

Ram Rhyton MugRam Rhyton Mug
by CHISCHILLY POTTERY

To answer your first question, yes, they also have dragon mugs just like this one.  If you’re shopping for more of a traditionalist, like Hellenic or Celtic recon, this is probably the ultimate gift you could buy them.  A rhyton is a specific drinking vessel used to make sacred libations (pour a few drops out for the God and the rest is for you) to the Gods.  This rhyton holds about 18oz and is  7 1/2 inches long from top of cup to the nose.  The handle acts to prop it up.  There are multiple colors of glaze offered and it’s even dishwasher safe.  I didn’t even look through the rest of the store because I can’t take my eyes off this.

cupOak leaf and acorn chalice
by Hughes Pottery

Here is another type of ritual cup, but one geared more towards the Wiccans and Druids on your list.  Or hell, buy a set of them and use them as wine glasses.  That would make a conversation starter!   I like the detail on the stem.  Not only does it look good, it gives you a better grip on the goblet.  It stands about 8 inches tall and isn’t as heavy as it first appears.  The attention to detail and use of different glazes, note the acorn is more flat while the rest of more glossy, are probably why Hughes Pottery was recommended to me by multiple people.

altar setRitual Wiccan Altar Set
by Artifactorium

I’ve been buying fine pottery from Nels long before I knew him as anyone other than that dude with the pierced nipples and witch hat that I’d see at a local festival.  In fact, my husband drank coffee from a mug this morning and I poured a libation last night from a chalice created by Nels.   So, although he is part of PNC and I also count him as a friend, I can’t let that keep him off this list.  A very special, and personal gift, this is a complete altar set.  Set includes a chalice, two small cups for ritual salt and water, a small covered jar for storing incense and a two handled tray, which with a little sand added can be used as a burner for incense cones or loose incense on charcoal. Or you can use the small tray for cakes, and the lidded jar for a burner.  If an altar set won’t fit your gift giving needs, there are platters, mugs, rattles, and jewelry available, too.

grocery bagWitch’s Grocery List Tote Bag
by Simple Adventure

Not only can you carry your groceries, it has a shopping list printed on it any self respecting witch would be proud of.  Or a nice bag to carry at conventions like Paganicon or Patheacon.  The bag is 100% cotton and is machine washable, but I’d let it air dry rather than throw it in the dryer.  A gift in an of itself, you could also use it as the ‘wrapping paper’ for other gifts.

backpackEntrails Sack Pack
by 0812edmab

Have an omen reader or a Heathen on your holiday list?   Or do they just a sense of humor that’s a bit more rough?  This may be more their style.  Nicely sized grab and go bag, good for over nights, books, or ritual supplies this bag has straps that can turn it into a backpack and a zipper to keep your contents secure.

PjsHeathen PJs
by All Things Norse

For the man (or woman) in your life that likes to snuggle.  These two piece cotton men’s pajama set comes with your choice of pattern of flannel pants and a white crew-neck pajamas tee top.  There are women’s styles and sizes available too.  All Things Norse also has throw pillows, ornaments, a viking ship puzzle, and much more.  I’m laughing about the Norse snuggie they offer, though.  I’m trying to picture some of the Heathens I know using one.  They kick you out of the mead hall for that.

pan t-shirtPan T-Shirt
by Sleepy Crow

Have you accepted Pan as your Lord and personal Satyr?  I have!  Pan is one of the great and most beloved deities of ancient Greece and modern Pagans.  I’m sure this t-shirt would cause many a double take and I know a Lutheran Pastor who would get a big kick out of this. Hint:  order the t-shirt one size larger than you normally wear.  11 colors to choose from.

cakeLove Goddess Cake Mix
by Vosges

It’s times like these that my gluten allergy really sucks.  I’m almost willing to be violently ill for days just to eat a slice of this cake.  Who’m I kidding, I’d eat the whole thing.  Excellent stocking stuffer, or if you are willing to bake, an excellent gift.  Vosges has some of the best chocolate in the world and the description of the cake is pure food porn.  “The finished cake is dense and moist with plenty of deep, dark chocolate Vosges Haut-Chocolat flair.”  Love Goddess indeed, I need to go somewhere private and touch myself.  Mmmmmmmm…..oh baby.

chocolateChocolate Deities
by Chocolate Deities

The name is self explanatory,  I only wish the website was – it is a serious pain in the ass to navigate.  If the chocolates weren’t so good, and the designs so meaningful, no one would bother.  But they are and they are so we do.  All the chocolate is fair trade chocolate and it is designed to look like Gods, Goddesses, and other immortals and heroes or symbols.  In this design, 108 Names of the Divine Mother are presented in an outgoing and ever-moving swirl emanating from a central OM symbo.  lThe packaging is lovely and thoughtful and comes with little surprises I won’t give away.  I’ve never yet met a Pagan that wouldn’t be thrilled to receive a gift of chocolate, so this is a safe…yet not at all boring gift to choose.  But they really, really need to redo their website and present better information on each item.

Circle Sanctuary joins in Interfaith Awareness Week

Madison, WI – This week, people of many faiths and traditions are joining together to celebrate religious diversity at Wisconsin’s Annual Interfaith Awareness Week.

Circle Sanctuary's Rev. Selena Fox

Circle Sanctuary’s Rev. Selena Fox

“A variety of religions have holidays in December, and it is a perfect time to celebrate together and learn about Wisconsin’s considerable religious diversity,” said Rev. Selena Fox, Senior Minister of Circle Sanctuary, one of the participating religious communities. “We are pleased to again be part of this important celebration through our participation in the World Religions of Wisconsin exhibits in the Capitol all week and with our Interfaith Open House at Circle Sanctuary Nature Preserve near Barneveld next Saturday.”

This is Wisconsin’s 15th annual Interfaith Awareness Week. Educational displays will be in the Rotunda of the State Capitol Building from December 3 to December 7, and a multi-faith presentation, the annual Capitol Celebration, will be held at Noon on December 5.

“After 15 years, I see we still have interfaith awareness needs,” said Rev. John-Brian Paprock of Holy Transfiguration Orthodox Chapel, founder and co-director of Interfaith Awareness Week. “We need to invite one another continually to the common ground in our communities. We need to invite one another to our houses of worship being good hosts and good guests. We have a need for regular ongoing education about the variety of religious/spiritual groups locally to enable any successful dialogue when crisis occurs. We continue to need multifaith service responses to our community needs.”

In addition to having displays in the Rotunda, a variety of Open House events will be at houses of worship all week.

“We join with people of many religions, spiritualities, and philosophies in praying for peace, understanding and cooperation this month and year-round,” said Rev. Fox, who has been part of the interfaith team organizing this event since it began. “I invite everyone to join us at our Open House and at the Capitol this week to learn, share and celebrate Wisconsin religious pluralism.”

Interfaith Awareness Week (IAW), was founded in 1998 by Rev. John-Brian Paprock, and is coordinated by him and Rev. Anne Wynne of the Madison Eckankar Community.   This year’s IAW began with Open Houses held on Sunday at Holy Transfiguration Orthodox Chapel, Madison Eckankar Community, the American Hindu Association and the Wisconsin Sikh Society – Middleton Gurdwara.  There will be Continuing Dialogue with the Sikh Community on Wednesday, December 5, at 6 pm at Prairie UU Society, 2010 Whenona Way in Madison. The Madison Eckankar Community will be holding a Community HU Prayer Song at 7:30 pm at the Gates of Heaven, 302 East Gorham Street, in Madison’s James Madison Park. The Madison Baha’i Center Open House will be on Thursday from 6:30-9 pm at the Baha’i Center at 324 W. Lakeside St. in Madison.

Circle Sanctuary’s Open House near Barneveld will begin with a potluck lunch at Noon on Saturday, December 8th,  followed by a multicultural & interfaith Happy Holidays traditions talk by Rev. Selena Fox at 2pm.Circle Sanctuary also will be sponsoring its 34th annual interfaith and multicultural Winter Solstice Pageant this month. It will be held in the New Auditorium of the First Unitarian Society in Madison on December 21st from 7-9pm.   Call 608-924-2216 or email events@circlesanctuary.org for directions or for more information.

PNC-Minnesota Winter Solstice 2012 Gift Picks: Babies, kids, and teens

Looking for the perfect Solstice gift for your favorite Pagan, Heathen, or Polytheist?  PNC-Minnesota’s 2012 Winter Solstice Gift Picks with expert advice, reviews, and recommendations for the latest movies, books, and other holiday gifts and treats can help.

Of course you can buy the usual toys for kids, it’s healthy for kids to play and that’s universal.  What gets more difficult is to choose gifts that reflect your family’s religion and ethics.  When you’re Pagan, Heathen or a Polytheist, that can be a bit more challenging.  Below are a few gift ideas for babies and children.  And remember, when possible, support your community by buying local or buying direct from the artist.

Baby Gifts

If you look on etsy, cafepress, or zazzle you can find tons of Heathen, Pagan, or polytheist inspired onesies and bibs.  If you want something a bit different, below are a few stand out gifts for the new baby or toddler.

baby blocksElemental baby blocks
by LittleBeastlings

Each block measures six inches square and each of the four blocks represents one of the four elements.  You’ll find sea turtles on the the water block and dragonflies on the air block. Not only is this a perfect learning tool, the blocks are also and cuddly.  You may want to check out other offerings in LittleBeastlings’ store.

ballsElemental baby shaker balls
by Treegold & Beegold

Treegold & Beegold once again makes it onto the PNC Gift Pick list.  (See this post for last year’s children’s gift picks)  Like the elemental blocks, the shaker balls are meant to teach and entertain baby with the four elements (and color identification).   The balls come in red, yellow, blue and green to represent the 4 elements and each has an embroidered circle sewn on it with a picture depicting the element it represents. Inside each ball is a shaker to make sound.  I know from my baby grand-nephew that making noise is one of the joys of his life.  Treegold & Beegold have over 100 items listed in their etsy store.

viking bootiesBaby booties
by GoblinMoonUK

UK artisanGoblin Moon, who lives on the enchanted Isle of Wight,  makes the cutest baby booties I have ever seen.  I don’t even like babies, but when I saw these I started saying, “Just wook at da cute wittle booties” to my husband.  All booties are knit out of pure wool or kid mohair.  The dragon booties are to die for.  I want a pair in my size.  Goblin Moon also has witch booties and booties with oak leaves on them – in addition to jewelry for adults.

rune plateRunic baby name plate
by Against the Grain

An extremely thoughtful gift for the new parent and carved to be an heirloom passed down through generations.  The Runic baby name plate is just under a foot in diameter.   Elder Futhark Runes around the outside spell out the baby’s name with Thor’s Hammer carved in the middle noting the date of birth.  This gift is, of course, made to order and you can choose the stain colors, if you wish.  Against the Grain also has other hand carved gifts such a Thor’s Hammer and knotwork animal wall hangings.

from Uncommon Goods

I want a set of these!  Simply apply these temporary tattoos with water and kids can make their own puppet show.  You get two sets of eight different animals in your pack – bird, shark, zebra, giraffe, cow, alligator, tiger and bumblebee.  Uncommon goods has some great educational and eco-friendly toys for kids, but they are usually pricey.  These tattoos are inexpensive, but are made in China.  Life is full of trade-offs.

by Dianne Hofmeyr, illustrated by Juse Daly

If you are looking for a bedtime book for your  younger child (age 4 to 8), check out this offering on Wizards & Fairies.  Dianne Hofmeyr’s retells an ancient  Ancient Egyptian creation myth which gives an enchanting explanation of how our starry universe came to be.  The illustrations are a nicely updated and respectful version of pharaonic art which supports the equally respectful story of the Gods Atum, Nut, and Geb.  Wizards & Fairies also carries other children’s books, coloring books, and games.  Worth a look.

Pagan Bed Time StoriesPagan Bedtime Stories:  How Maui Slowed the Sun
by Lahela MP Nihipali

How Maui Slowed the Sun is a Hawaiian tale re-told by the author, a native of Hawai’i, and is designed to be a bed time story book as well as a 30 page coloring and activity book.   Like many mythos, this tale contains subjects that could be difficult for children if not handled with sensitivity.   When Maui beats the legs of La, the author provides a discussion area about bullying and violence.  In addition to the book, there are free audio podcasts you and your children can download and listen to here.

warlockWarlock in Training or Daddy’s Little Heathen t-shirt
by Younique Pagan

You can have either print on the front of a  50% cotton 50% poly t-shirt in sizes 2-4, 6-8 and one size 10/12.  The childrens’ t-shirts are pretty tame, while the adult t-shirts can be more in your face.  Yes, more in your face.   I have to admit, I found many of them funny.  (Witch by nature, Bitch by choice)   But you are proud and loud, you may want to click on over to Younique Pagan’s shop and pick up a few items.

.

panPan T-shirt
by Elemental Shop

If you are looking for a more eco-friendly tshirt option Elemental Shop, based in Oregon, fits the bill.  While not a Pagan shop per se, they are Pagan friendly and their designs show it.  In this t-shirt Pan is playing a beguiling tune on his pipes.  Elemental Shop’s t-shirts use only water based-inks, not harsh chemicals   The t-shirts themselves are either made from organic cotton or are recycled cotton shirts and are made in the USA, sweatshop free.  No wonder Pan looks so happy.  Elemental Shop is huge, there’s almost 1000 items to choose from, but the amazing designs will pull you in.  Baby and adult sizes also available.

chalkVeggie Sidewalk Chalk
by Uncommon Goods

Kids put everything in their mouths so it’s important to make sure their toys are non-toxic.  Little known fact:  some brands of sidewalk chalk have contained dangerous levels of lead!  Even if your kid isn’t snacking on sidewalk chalk, the dust gets everywhere.  Veggie chalk is made out of organic ingredients, like hibiscus, turmeric, paprika, and spinach, and are 100% safe if your toddle or child puts them in his/her mouth.

Teens

deckSkateboard deck
by pentagramstar

The classic pentagram is just one of the designs offered for skateboard decks.  Traditional, old school (think 70’s), and traditional decks are available.  If you want to protect your graphics, but don’t want your teen to be called a poser, find some ugly sticks to slap on.  Zazzle, like better known site cafepress, offers basic good that can be customized.  If you look through PentragramStar’s store and don’t see a design you like, you can create your own.

.

bikeOn the go recharging
by Ecoxpower

Chances are your teen is always on the go…and has several portable electronic devices.  This handy device, which attaches to the front wheel of your bike, uses the power generated by pedaling to charge up phones, some tablets, and MP3 players.  It more pricey than our other gift suggestions, but worth it.  Also a good gift idea for college students and those who commute to work by bike.

.

bagHunger Games Messenger Bag
by The Messenger

If your teen is a fan of Hunger Games, encourage their obsession (especially if it weens them off of Twilight) with this messenger bag.  If sparkly stuff  isn’t your teen’s thing (me?  I’m good with bags that sparkle, just not vamps) this bag can be made with or without glitter.  If your teen is wild about the Hunger Games they will be wild about this bag.   The bags are available on black, white, red, yellow, mint green, pale blue, turquoise, lilac, pale pink or pink, with design in colors of your choice.  The artisan is from the UK so keep in mind it will take longer to ship and the Solstice is right around the corner.

.

plateHarm None License Plate Holder
by dingostuff

Perfect for the teen just getting their driver’s license or first car, this license plate holder has the perfect sentiment, “An it harm none, Do what ye will.”    Two pentagrams flank the bottom.  The holder is made of a durable chrome and the phrase is applied with a permanent adhesive weatherproof decal that is fade and water resistant.

caseWitches Rule of Three iPhone Case
by lenzart and designed by Marina Lenzino

“Ever mind the rule of three – three times what thou givest returns to thee, this lesson well, thou must learn – Thee only gets what thou dost earn.”  There are many Pagan, Heathen, and polytheist cell phone covers and custom electronics on cafepress, but this spiral design is one of my favorites.  If you want to find more, simply use the search feature built into the site.  And like the skate deck on zazzle, if you don’t see a design you like, you may upload a design you own the rights to and custom make exactly what you want.  NOTE:  This case will NOT fit and iPhone 4 or 5.

.

norse caseHeathen iPhone 4 Case
by All Things Norse

If your teen’s taste, or religion, runs a bit more Nordic they may prefer this iPhone 4 case.  A Valkyrie is shown leading a fallen hero towards Valhalla.  The case easily slides on an off and doesn’t obscure any of the controls.  Cases not only add individuality, always important to teens, they protect against scratches and the inevitable drop.   All Things Norse also has t-shirts and other gifts available in their store.  NOTE:  iPone cases are very specific to phone model.  This case will only fit the  iPhone 4 or iPhone 4s.

Killing, Death, Hunting, and Pagans – Editorial

death_tree

I just finished a week of hunting deer in Wisconsin, and am a Pagan. Most Pagans don’t have a deep connection to hunting, I guess their demographic is more urban than many religious groups. Hunting is not a big Pagan topic of conversation unless you are from, or live in, a rural area.

A recent blog post by author Stifyn Emtys caught my attention. He wrote questioning hunting, well really questioning it as if hunting is essentially “enjoying killing”. The post goes on to conclude that some,  “people don’t kill because they have to. They kill because they want to. And that, my friends, isn’t just scary. It’s horrifying.“ Another, commenting on social media about that post, took it a step further with, “Hunting, when one has access to vegetation and other food sources is just cold-blooded murder, no way around it. ”

Murder is killing a person with malice a forethought, quite a stretch to classify hunting with this term.

What offends me is that the post’s author admits that hunting experience is an area of limited personal contact and understanding, but still concludes, “ people who kill animals in the name of sport or spirituality …. reveal something starkly horrific about the human condition.” The author equates hunting with “enjoying killing”.  I don’t hunt because I enjoy killing. I accept that many things in life involve death, and yes, sometimes killing.

As a Pagan and a hunter, I don’t feel compelled to proselytize about either activity. There are plenty of horror stories about both designations, there are plenty of reason to be neither, it is a personal choice.  The blog post did get me to think about killing, death, and particularly our relationship as Pagans to it.

Where is the Pagan experience with death in this intellectual argument? It seemed lacking. My spirituality and experience has changed how I look at death, and at killing. I don’t see it as a punishment, an act of fate or karma, even something to fear. I see it all around me, everyday.

Paganistan Weekly; December 3-9

December 21, this newsletter is done, unless someone else takes it over. After that, all information will still be available at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/TwinCitiesPagans/ so if you haven’t joined, don’t delay. The end is near.

The night of December 21 through the morning of December 22, The Eye of Horus will be hosting an all night fire circle. This event will combine the transformative power of an alchemical fire circle with the devotion of a Yule vigil, on a year ending the Mayan calendar. This is a spiritually and physically demanding event, but for those who are able, it has the potential of being life changing. Certainly it could be the beginning of a new tradition. http://shop.eyeofhorus.biz/Sacred-Fire-Circle-Solstice-Vigil-p/12212012.htm

Circle of Dragons will begin a Year and a Day intensive course for Solitaires that would like the Pre-Initiate education given to Covener’s, without the necessity of joining a Coven, February, 2013. Space is extremely limited and all students will need to interview for this course. If you have any questions or would like more information please email circle_of_dragons@ hotmail.com.
