Target Corp Comes Under Fire for Campaign Contributions

Gay rights supporters call for boycott of Target amid allegations the corporation supports homophobic hate speech.

An Eden Prairie woman vents her anger at Target over their political contributions

The first controversy in Minnesota over the Supreme Court ruling allowing Corporations to donate money to political candidates is under way. Target Corporation’s contributions are linked by some gay rights activists to an anti-gay marriage Gubernatorial candidate who is associated with a Christian rock band that lauds the execution of homosexuals in Muslim countries. Target, headquartered in Bloomington,  says its donations to political candidates are based on economic considerations and points to its history of supporting GLBT causes. A Minneapolis GLBT Pagan says that Target is being wrongly portrayed as hostile towards diversity issues.

Agora Comes to Minneapolis

Movie hailed as most important explicitly Pagan film ever released opens at the Uptown theatre on Friday.

Where: Uptown Theatre

When: Opens Friday, July 30th – HERE ONLY ONE WEEK

Showtimes: (1:30 4:15) 7:00 9:45

Synopsis: Agora, written Amenabar and Mateo Gil and directed by Alejandro Amenabar, tells the story of religious, cultural, and political tension between Greco-Roman polytheists and Christians in 4th century CE Alexandria through the eyes of Hypatia (played by Rachel Weisz), a female philosopher, mathematician, and philosopher.  Surrounded by religious turmoil and social unrest, Hypatia struggles to save the knowledge of classical antiquity from destruction.

Buzz in the community:

“I predict this will become one of those “must see” films that will be watched and shared within our community.” Jason Pitzl-Waters, The Wild Hunt

“Awash in emotion, I wept. I wept for the burning of the scrolls. I wept for the taking of the scientist and philosopher. I wept for her death. I wept for never having seen the great city of Alexandria at its height, before the Pagans fell into excess and the Christians took false power. I wept for all of those who failed to turn the tide of ignorance, political greed, and mob rule.” T. Thorn Coyle

“…we are witnessing what we will remember as the first Truly Pagan movie and the first Great Pagan movie. Zan Fraser, The Juggler

“I think Agora is one of the most important films the Pagan community has ever received. It explores a world suddenly devoid of our virtues, lost in darkness…The film evoked strong emotions… As a Pagan, this was not an easy film to watch. Seeing our Gods, temples, centers of learning, priests and philosophers desecrated was painful. Really painful. We know it happened. We’ve read about it. To actually see it makes it real in a way I did not expect.” Star Foster, Patheos

Community Notes – July 2010

Grace Morgan is out of the hospital and expressing thanks to everyone who sent her healing energy after her aneurysm. She said that while one group was performing a healing ceremony, her ex was listening to her “’babble’, but then I suddenly ‘came to’  and said something about an Energy Burst I had just felt!” She continued, “The quilt that you all took time and effort to create brought tears of gratitude to all of you for wanting to help me get better.” Hopefully good healing energy will continue to be sent to Grace and her recovery will keep progressing quickly.

The Eye of Horus has announced plans to move! The new location should be even better for our local community. If you want to support them in this wonderful move forward, go to 2717 Lyndale Avenue in Minneapolis and buy their stuff.

On August 11th, the Minnesota Heathens Moot will be moving to the 42 Avenue Station. They’ll try it out, and see if this location is convenient for more people.

Wendy Rule will be returning to Paganistan! She’ll be performing at Patrick’s Cabaret on the evening of Sunday September 12th with Kari Tauring opening the show.

The latest issue of Spellcraft Features an article by local artist Paul Rucker and is available at Magus Books & Herbs

Don’t forget to sign up for Sacred Harvest Festival:

Twin Cities Pagan Pride is looking for presenters! (September 24th and 25th, 2010 at Lake Harriet Spiritual Community in Minneapolis) They are seeking panels, workshops, and rituals of interest to those unfamiliar with or very new to Paganism. Find out more about programming proposals here.

More detailed and involved workshop and presentation topics would be a great fit for Twin Cities Pagan Pride’s new event, a spring conference called Paganicon (March 25th-27th at the Doubletree Park Place in St. Louis Park: for more information, click here.

If you’d be willing to help make any Twin Cities Pagan events happen, they have all sorts of volunteer possibilities available: everything from an hour of easy work to possible board positions. Current tasks they’re especially looking for are help with publicity, marketing, and day-of event help. Check out their website and sign up for our email list (lefthand sidebar), and emailinfo@tcpaganpride.org with any questions.
