The Fourth Estate – Political Opinion
(…. is given a condo in Plymouth as severance pay, and retires)
An article about the press is a good place to start political opinion writing at PNC-MN.
The term Fourth Estate has its origins in 17th Century England. It was originally used to describe ‘mob rule’ but mutated to describe the press as the fourth branch of parliament. As an independent entity, the press was presumed a force to keep parliament from straying to far from the truth in its propaganda.
The tradition of the press as ‘independent’ followed democracies around the world. The assessment of a true democracy became synonymous with a country’s press being able to write freely from its experience. This country began with a grassroots, locally based and owned news system. The “Colonial newspapers are unsung heroes of the American Revolution and the Revolutionary War.”
More Local Reaction to Target Campaign Contribution
In continuing coverage of the Target Corporation campaign contribution story, the PNC interviewed local Pagans for their reaction. Robin Grimm lives in Minneapolis and is a prominent member of the Pagan community. Paul Anders is a Solitary living in the Rochester area.
To read our previous article about the cause and background of the issue, plus an interview with a Minneapolis GLBT Pagan who works for Target, please go here.

Question: In general, what do you think about corporations and unions spending funds on political issues?
Robin: Generally I am opposed to anything other than individual human beings being able to contribute to political campaigns or political issue campaigning. Corporations, unions, etc. are all made up of individuals that have the right to have their voices heard. Non-biological entities have no business in politics.
Paul: I don’t like how much money is in politics. It makes it hard for individuals to be heard. I guess all that money is just how it is, though. I believe in freedom of speech and I guess if a guy believes in that he can’t just say that only some people get it. Groups should be able to express an opinion on most anything and if you want to express a political opinion you need to use cash to do it.
Agora – Film Review
The hype of this movie got me out to the theater tonight. Billed as a Pagan film, the lead character is classed as one, although she is portrayed more as philosopher, teacher, and scientist. The polytheists are, for the most part, the ‘good guys’ (interestingly the Christians were always dressed in black, and the Pagans mostly in white ). Since the film is set right as the Christianization of the Roman empire is nearly complete, we don’t really learn much about these Pagans. We only see the beautiful temple, the remnant of the scholarly side of the now passed Greek legacy, and hear brief reference to their principal Ptolemaic God, Serapis.
