Editorial – UMPA Pagans Walk the Talk

Many Pagans describe their religion as “Earth-Centered.” I’ve found this a rather puzzling statement since I wouldn’t describe my path as that way and I don’t usually see much difference between the actions of Pagans and non-Pagans in regard to the earth. I hear a marked difference how they talk about the earth as sacred, but as my mother taught me, “If you want to know what a person really believes and values, watch their actions and ignore their words.” I don’t know, I don’t think we show by our actions that we are any more or less “Earth-Centered” than any other group in the US.

Which is why I was excited by the prospect of picking up garbage with a group of fellow Pagans last Sunday. The group is the Upper Midwest Pagan Alliance, UMPA for short. They used to sponsor a 2 mile stretch of highway out by Anoka under Minnesota’s Adopt a Highway Program. Now they have claimed a section of 35E near Hugo. Last Sunday was the first time UMPA cleaned their new bit of interstate.

I was delayed by work and arrived on scene about an hour late. A group of five had already donned their attractive safety vests, put on work gloves, grabbed trash bags and sticks, and were picking up trash along side the North-bound lane. Judy gave me safety tips, helped me suit up, and then John joined us to do the South-bound lane.

Paganistan Weekly; October 11-17

The Highway cleanup went extremely well. The new stretch was far less littered than the old stretch, and the weather was perfect. The new sign is up declaring the stretch has been adopted by Pagans. There will be an article up at the local PNC this week: https://pncminnesota.wordpress.com/

There’s a new Pagan on examiner.com! Not very new, she’s been there since February, but I just found out about her, so go and subscribe: http://www.examiner.com/wicca-in-minneapolis/kristin-barton

The Eye of Horus’s big new store is getting ready, and looking great. The walls are painted, the floor is going in, and they’re imminently closer to the move. But wait, there’s more! They’ll be having a HUGE Grand Opening/Seventh Anniversary/Psychic Sunday Extravaganza October31. It’s a perfect opportunity to check out the new location at 3012 Lyndale Avenue, 3 blocks south of their old location, between ZRS Fossil and Smitten Kitten.

Pagan Elder Survey

Author M. Macha NightMare is asking for Pagans across the world to participate in a 10 questions survey on eldership in contemporary Paganism. The survey results will be used in a paper Macha is writing. Responses will be collected until January 15, 2011 and she hopes that Pagans will not only fill out the quick survey, but will circulate it through their communities.

You can click here to take the survey.

Emergency Measures Passed for Harmony Tribe Elections

Surprise announcements from the current sitting board of Harmony Tribe, the organization that produces the Sacred Harvest Festival each year, of their withdrawal from running for board positions on next’s year’s board placed the October 16th election in jeopardy. The withdrawals resulted in most board positions having no one running for the seat and no way to fill those positions under current by-laws.

The organization’s by laws require nominees for the board to be a member in good standing for at least 6 months out of the last 2 years. Notification and absentee ballots were also to be sent out 14 days in advance of the election. With only seven days until the election and the limitations on nominee eligibility, it was doubtful Harmony Tribe could fill the open board positions.

Today the board and Tribe members met in an Open Meeting to address those election concerns. Several emergency measures were introduced and approved by the Tribe to address those issues.

The Tribe suspended all elections by-laws and policies for just this election cycle and created an election committee empowered to quickly create election guideline and run the election. The Election Committee is comprised of Michelle Hooker, Robin Kinney, Lynne Petros, Mary Oczak, and Carol (last name not used on request) The committee made arrangements to meet directly after the Open Meeting.

The election will still take place starting at 2pm on October 16that the Sacred Paths Center and nominations will be allowed right up until the vote takes place for that position. The eligibility requirements were also altered to allow any voting Harmony Tribe member to run for office as long as they are a paid voting member by tonight (October 9th) at 11:59PM. Absentee ballots will not be sent out to Tribe members, all votes must be cast in person or by phone during the allotted voting window on October 16th. Election Referees were also voted in. They are Michelle Hooker, Robin Kinney, and Lynn Petros.

The sitting board promised to work with the incoming board after the election to ensure a smooth transition.

Witches Respond to O’Donnell’s “I’m Not A Witch” Ad

Delaware Senatorial candidate Christine O’Donnell aims to get her campaign back on track after a video of her admitting to “dabbling in witchcraft” came to light. While some on the political Right were quick to attack O’Donell as a Satanist, it was the ridicule from the Left that took many Pagans off guard. The very thought of witchcraft was publicly mocked in the media and treated as a reason O’Donnell is unfit for office.

To counter this, the O’Donnell campaign has released this ad with the attention grabbing title “I’m not a witch, I’m you”:

In it, O’Donnell attempts to position herself as an everywoman candidate saying “I’m not a witch, I’m nothing you’ve heard. I’m you.”

But what if you are a witch?

Pagans from around the country have begun to respond by posting “I am a Witch”videos to YouTube.  As these videos come out, PNC-National is adding them to our YouTube channel.  (Click the link to see all the videos) One of the of videos so far:

This series of videos by witches not only push back at the idea that witches are the “other”, but they highlight that witches pay their taxes, are active in their community and they vote.

What about Minnesota witches? Will you be posting an “I am a witch” video? If so let us know and we will add you to our channel.
