Eye of Horus Launches eBookstore

Eye of Horus, a local metaphysical shop, now has the first ever Pagan Google eBook Store, with access to millions of physical books, and thousands of e-books.

Jane Hansen, co-owner of the Eye of Horus has been feverishly developing the new website for over a month.”This is totally a perfect fit for us. We love books. We love books so much that we opened a bookstore. But we also love trees, so being able to sell electronic books is just great. We do have a plant-a-tree program for the books we do sell, but some people want to skip the whole harvesting and planting cycle.”

Thraicie Hawkner, Jane’s partner as co-owner of Eye of Horus, said, “We’re excited. Now we can help people find the exact title they are looking for by just typing in a quick search on our site, and voila. Special Orders are super easy, whether it’s for a local customer for store pickup or a local customer in Guinea Mills, Virginia.”

Last December Google and ABA (American Booksellers Association) announced a partnership that could help even the playing field for independent booksellers. Jane and Thraicie read that, and as Thraicie put it, “This is specifically for independent booksellers with storefronts, who want to offer the service and community events that local stores are known for, with the selection of the big guys. We thought, we want that! And we want to be the first Pagan Store to make the leap to [Google] eBooks.”

The new website, https://www.eyeofhorusbooks.com, features curated lists. Several local Pagan experts submitted reading lists, and folks at the Eye are reaching out to all the authors and teachers who have been at the store, or in the extended network, to ask for their recommendations. Jane also went through the titles and searched for new titles of special interest to Pagan readers well, such as herself. As such, this new website is situated to provide what Jane describes as, “The bookstore community experience in the largest Pagan bookstore ever [online]. I’m like a kid in the candy factory when I browse to select which titles we can feature for special order or even pre-order.”

Jane continued, “For many of our customers, part of the appeal of Google eBooks is the ability to support Eye of Horus online, as well as in the bookstore. It’s part of the whole Indie business movement. We’re not a huge conglomerate. We’re real people. We can’t afford to take a loss on things to sell them for less. But with Google eBooks, since we don’t have to carry stock, we do discount where we can, so we are competitive.”

The new website officially went public this Wednesday at noon. They held their launch party celebration Friday night to coincide with 11-11-11. When asked why they chose that night for their celebration, Jane answered, “Aw, come on, it’s right there, how could we pass that up?”

The new store allows people the option of e-books which are kept on ‘the cloud’ or downloaded; physical books shipped directly to people; or physical books shipped to the Eye of Horus where customers can pick them up. Jane said, “It’s like a do-it-yourself special order system.”

DC Pagan Community Center Set For Year End Opening

The Open Hearth Foundation has secured a space for the District of Columbia (DC) Pagan Community Center.  I interviewed Iris Firemoon, foundation board member, about the securing of a space and the Community Center launch planned for December 31st.

Are you excited at the prospect of the DC Community Center opening?

We are very excited! We signed a lease at the end of September, and took possession of the space on October 3rd. We have been hitting the ground running since then. Our official launch will be December 31st of this year, and we will have a launch party.

How did you put this all together?

The Open Hearth Foundation was founded in 1999.  Several groups, area leaders , and individuals came together and decided that they needed a space that could accommodate the kind of work that a lot of Pagan groups do. We need a space where we can stay past midnight; where we aren’t worried about out drums being too loud; we are not worried about inviting strangers or the public to our home and to putting our address on the internet; where we can store the things that a group may need. They noted all these things and built a framework for what they wanted in a Pagan Community Center. Over the last 12 years we have been raising the money to get there. Continue reading

“God Factory” Art Show Opens Saturday

Roger Williamson with Painting

Roger Williamson of Magus Books and Herbs has a one person art show of his paintings entitled, “God Factory” , Mystery IS Energy… but what does that mean? opening this weekend at The Nicollet.  Comets-ov-Cupid and Jealous Jester will offer live music for the opening reception 7pm Saturday, October 8.  The Nicollet is a spacious relaxed space with fine coffee and food at the NE corner of Franklin and Nicollet Avenues in Minneapolis.  I talked to Roger about his art.

How long have you been painting?

I used to paint way back in school in Coventry, England. Later my father was helping to get me back on the straight, and signed me up for art school in the town we lived. He dropped me there the first day. I wasn’t very impressed with it. For the next six weeks he dropped me there each morning. I would walk in the front door, down the corridor and walk out the side door. He finally got a letter asking where I was… and he asked me where the Hell I had been. I really was in love with rock and roll, so I had spent my time in the south railroad coffee bar. It was the first time I had heard Bo Diddley, and I can still remember that experience. In those days you could go to college free in England. At that time I was totally preoccupied with music, and that continued until my thirties.

I was writing a book and I needed an image of the Lovers tarot card. I had never been happy with the images that were available. My art started from there. I was working in pastels then and did a series on the Enochian workings on the Earth Tablet. I did some automatic drawings about these experiences. It was like this floodgate opened, I couldn’t stop just churning out these pictures. It was almost like an exorcism. This started about thirteen years ago when I really started. It was such a shock when I would get one of these pastels framed, it was so expensive. I switched to oil so when I got one done I could just pound a nail in the wall and hang it up. I transferred my pastel technique to oil and then worked from there.

International Peace Day

Thirty years ago, the UN General Assembly declared September 21st to be an International Day of Peace.  The UN envisions this day as one where people and organizations observe the day with celebrations and educational programs promoting peace  and that all nations participate in a global  ceasefire.

The theme for this year’s International Day of Peace is Make Your Voice Heard.  Mr. Kiyo Akasaka, UN Under-Secretay-General for Communications, spoke about the significance of the this year’s celebration, “September 21, 2011, marks the 30th anniversary of the International Day of Peace. As we begin today a 100-day countdown to the observance, we pay tribute to the many civil society activists who lent the strength of their imagination to the institution of this Day.

The United Nations General Assembly declared in 1981 that the Day shall be devoted to commemorating and strengthening the ideals of peace, both within and among all nations and peoples. It invited all Member States, the United Nations system, regional organizations, non-governmental organizations, peoples and individuals to commemorate the Day in different ways, especially through all means of education, and to cooperate with the United Nations in the observance of that day.

Education, and the fruits of education, have been central to this observance. Young women and men everywhere are demonstrating the power of connection by reaching out to each other, and rallying together, in the common cause of the dignity and human rights to which their peoples aspire.

It is in tribute to them, and the spirit they represent, that we have chosen this year, under the overall idea of Peace and Democracy, the theme of “Make Your Voice Heard.” The United Nations stands ready to work with the peoples in whose name the International Day of Peace was established to secure a world ready for, and worthy of, the peace that is essential to all creative human endeavour.”

Talks & Discussion will be happening through-out the day.

I talked to Roger Williamson about the history of the store. Provoking Thoughts and Expanding Horizons since 1992! is your website tag line, what does that mean to you?

We feel that in society a lot of people aren’t encouraged to go out and pursue their dreams. They may not be aware of all the opportunities open to them. I would like to think Magus helps promote that idea, magical philosophy, that you can be anything you want to be. We try to appeal to open-minded people, who feel all belief systems are valid. We should respect all points of view, even if they happen to be contrary to our own.
