  • Roger Williamson Solo Exhibition Opening Sat. August 3rd

    Paintings by Roger Williamson

Roger Williamson, Pagan artist and  founder of Magus books has a show of recent works  opening  Saturday August 3rd, 2013 7-10pm at the Stevens Square Center for the Arts, and running through August 25th, 2013.

In the exhibition, Williamson presents a series of artworks that trace a specific understanding the artist has of Chimera.  Williamson refers to Chimera as a quality of the mythological sphinx, that is mystery rather than Chimera’s usually accepted quality as an illusionary entity or fabrication of the mind; especially as an unrealizable dream.

Mystery is energy, a fitting title of the sphinx and while she retains her mystery she maintains her power.

Only when she gives up her secrets does she lose her power and die.

It is this theme of mystery which permeates the works on display and the viewer is led through a labyrinth of images that challenge one to quest through the door that leads to our inner selves where the answers to all our questions reside.

Williamson’s installation is composed of oil paintings on both wood panels and canvas.

OPENING:  Saturday August 3rd, from 7-10 p.m., for the exhibition opening and to meet the artist.

Roger Williamson is a Minneapolis-based artist who has exhibited his paintings in local galleries.

He is also the author of several books which include The Sun at Night and the Lucifer Diaries and is the

creator of Tarot of the Morning Star tarot deck. Some images from the deck will be included in the exhibit.

Comets Ov Cupid is a space rock project by Jason Kesselring, formerly of Skye Klad and Satyrswitch.

Darkly cosmic the music evokes a sense of eternal twilight creating sonic landscapes of distorted voices,

cosmic pulse and hazy drones. Guitar based in composition the sounds range from full-blown metalgazer

walls of sound to ethereal astral folk.

“God Factory” Art Show Opens Saturday

    Roger Williamson with Painting

Roger Williamson of Magus Books and Herbs has a one person art show of his paintings entitled, “God Factory” , Mystery IS Energy… but what does that mean? opening this weekend at The Nicollet.  Comets-ov-Cupid and Jealous Jester will offer live music for the opening reception 7pm Saturday, October 8.  The Nicollet is a spacious relaxed space with fine coffee and food at the NE corner of Franklin and Nicollet Avenues in Minneapolis.  I talked to Roger about his art.

How long have you been painting?

I used to paint way back in school in Coventry, England. Later my father was helping to get me back on the straight, and signed me up for art school in the town we lived. He dropped me there the first day. I wasn’t very impressed with it. For the next six weeks he dropped me there each morning. I would walk in the front door, down the corridor and walk out the side door. He finally got a letter asking where I was… and he asked me where the Hell I had been. I really was in love with rock and roll, so I had spent my time in the south railroad coffee bar. It was the first time I had heard Bo Diddley, and I can still remember that experience. In those days you could go to college free in England. At that time I was totally preoccupied with music, and that continued until my thirties.

I was writing a book and I needed an image of the Lovers tarot card. I had never been happy with the images that were available. My art started from there. I was working in pastels then and did a series on the Enochian workings on the Earth Tablet. I did some automatic drawings about these experiences. It was like this floodgate opened, I couldn’t stop just churning out these pictures. It was almost like an exorcism. This started about thirteen years ago when I really started. It was such a shock when I would get one of these pastels framed, it was so expensive. I switched to oil so when I got one done I could just pound a nail in the wall and hang it up. I transferred my pastel technique to oil and then worked from there.

Magus Books and Herbs – 19 years of Service – Interview

Magus books is celebrating 19 years serving the Twin Cities this month. Join them tomorrow, Saturday Sept 17th from 10am-5pm for Customer Appreciation Day at Magus Books & Herbs.  FREE BBQ’d Vittles catered by Standing Stones Coven , Tea Sampling, Door Prizes, Grab Bags, Tarot, Aura Photos & other fantastic specials. Talks & Discussion will be happening through-out the day.

I talked to Roger Williamson about the history of the store. Provoking Thoughts and Expanding Horizons since 1992! is your website tag line, what does that mean to you?

We feel that in society a lot of people aren’t encouraged to go out and pursue their dreams. They may not be aware of all the opportunities open to them. I would like to think Magus helps promote that idea, magical philosophy, that you can be anything you want to be. We try to appeal to open-minded people, who feel all belief systems are valid. We should respect all points of view, even if they happen to be contrary to our own.
